Hamilton Falls is one of those places that defies casual photography. Most photos that you see of the place makes it out to be a long, sloping and relatively easy place with happy tourists perched nearby in swim trunks. This is a false illusion.
My brother, Terry, was one of the people who died at Hamilton Falls, over 43 years ago, on July 16th. He was but 23 years old at the time.
He and a girlfriend crossed the falls at the top. He slipped. She was in front of him and he behind. She initially thought he was joking around, hiding behind a tree or something, until someone at the bottom noticed his body floating in the middle bowl.
He hit his head on the way down, falling into the bowl in the middle of the falls. She could not see him floating as his body was initially pushed to the bowl's edges and could not be seen from the top.
The Falls are a sheer rock face sweeping up at seeming a minimum grade of 55 degrees. The water has powerfully scooped out deep swirling pools that look deceptively still and the ground leading down to it (from where your GPS will have you tackle it currently) is slippery, treacherous, and should only be attempted by cautious folks with good knees. It is an excellent place for adventurous folk who see themselves as a bit of a billy goat.
I don't understand why some parts are not roped off or why this park is open in the first place. People die here way too much.
Perfect for those who do not enjoy TV on sunny days. If your dog is trained and socialized it's a great spot for them as well. Highly recommended
Dangerous to swim in upper falls pool. Ladder is for emergency egress, not swimming. Lower falls pool is fun and safe. Great place to cool off. Lower falls pool good for dogs and kids. Bring God shoes if entering from upper side.
Please use caution when enjoying this beautiful waterfall!
But if you approach it from the park-side (recommended) the paths leading up to it are well-curated without taming too much and you can see the falls from the bottom as well as the long-charming stream leading up to it with relative ease. Well worth it.
